gas problem

i need some advice was ridin today the motor died gas pouring out the air filter finally quit turned gas valve off started it up then turned the gas back on everything fine now what caused it bad gas? 2000 softail deuce with carb. i also noticed that when open the throttle wide open when ridin i seems to smell a little gas like it coming out the carb is that normal.

Or dirt caught under float needle. Same difference, same remedy.

Take the bowl off and clean the needle and seat, got crud in there stopping the needle from seating. Might want to pull the tank and clean it out, may have some junk in also.
