Yes it is hard to design a valid study. That is why it is hard to become a good scientist. That is why many important public policy decisions are based on junk science, that is agenda driven.
Very well said and very true!
Personally, I do not give a hoot about the statistics related to helmets and fatalities/injuries. My position is that it is my choice to decide whether I wear a helmet or not. Nobody elses business but mine. When we allow idiot politicians to make that decision for us, we are opening the door for other idiotic infringements on our rights. Suppose some do-gooder politician decided it was saver to play chess thant softball, and he has statistics to back his claim up. Should he propose legislation banning softball in favor of chess??? Of course that is rediculous - but so is telling me what activities I can participate in and what safety gear I need. MY CHOICE. Let the politicians start solving some of the problems with the economy and stay the heck out of my personal life.
Interesting, my wife works in a nursing home and makes far more that minimum wage and is difinitely not a loser. Interesting take you have about those that presumably make less than you... are they all losers?
There are upscale ($$$) nursing homes, and there are personal care homes. I'm sure there are good ones, but the personal care homes I've seen are typically a private residence where an individual has decided to reap the cash benefits of housing invalids. Many of those places are indeed staffed by minimum wage losers, and on occasion not staffed at all.
Some of the low rent nursing homes aren't fit for dogs either. I'm sure the guy wasn't attacking your wife. There are a lot of places you could end up that would turn your stomach, and she probably doesn't work at one of those..

I agree with you 100%. My curiousity is in hopes there is not a lot of correlation between states with helmet laws and lower fatalities compared to those without helmet laws. I am just curious to see if there is a big difference. I live in MN, and we have one of the largest ownership/motorcycle riders per capita, in the country. We do not have a helmet law, and I dont see or hear about a lot of motorcycle NON-ALCOHOL related fatalities caused because of no head gear.

I am sure there are, but to categorize everyone working in nursing homes as minimum wage losers is not accurate and shows a lack of knowledge on his part.
Forget the studies. Minor impacts will leave you in a nursing home for life as some minimum wage loser changes your diaper once a day.
Or maybe you will get "lucky" and die as someone recently did while driving at low speeds in a parade, protesting helmet laws.
As I recall, that's not even close to what happened. Seems like the guy died several miles away, after the protest was over, when he was going at higher speed.
As for the studies, somewhere, a few months ago, I saw some stats showing that Illinois had a better MC safety record than Wisconsin, even though Illinois has no helmet law for anyone and Wisconsin has a DOT for everybody law.
The huge piece of missing data is that they don't account for motorcycle miles driven after the helmet law was reinstated. I'm guessing that number went down a bunch, too.

Sorry, I'm gonna have to call you on that one. Only riders under 18 in Wisconsin are required to wear a helmet.
I think what you mean is that Illinois (no helmet law) and Michigan (mandatory DOT helmet law) had the same number of motorcycle fatalities for a given year (not sure if it was last year or the year before).
Not really that valuable of info unless you know the number of registered motorcycles in each state, though.
