Hello all. I'm currently on my 5th bike but the first Harley. 05 Softail Deuce. It has 7500everything miles on it. My question is are these Harleys known to use oil. I've put almost 1000 miles on mine in the 2 weeks ive owned it and it is almost a quart low. It doesn't leak anywhere so I assume its going out the pipes or something. 2nd question is what oil to use. I live an hour from closest HD shop and would be more convenient to just pick up oil from local part store like Oriel's. Thanks
That is the correct way to check it...As long as it is between the upper and lower marks on the dipstick it should be fine...I wouldn't add oil unless it is down on the lower mark...I have found if you try to maintain the oil level on the upper mark it tends to end up in the air filter...just keep an eye on it if it is between the marks...Leave it alone...Ride it and enjoy it!
We'll I bought a 1quart year unlimited mile warranty from Harley when I bought it. So I guess it looks like I may be using it. I was told from another HD ruder that his uses oil not to worry but that seems like a large amount to be using in a short time. I have noticed a lil black smoke when I hammer on the throttle

See if they will replace the valve guide seals since it is a known problem. Also what is a 1quart year warranty?
My 2005 Heitage is in the shop right for the same oil useage. The shop owner says it is not really the seals but the value guides are pretty much crap. He will also replace the seals but that the guides are the real problem. For what it is worth.
