I have a 2007 Electra Glide Classic with a dealer installed 103 inch upgrade. Cams pipes etc. Only 28,000 miles. Right at the 2 yr mark the factory starter went out. The dealer covered it under waranty. One year later that one went out. I was on the road so I got a Hi torque HD starter from a dealer in Minnesota. Now just about a year later that one has gone out. I am loking at starter #4 in 4 years. What is going on? To much compression? I do not have compression releases. I took the hi torque Starter off last night and tore the solenoid apart. I cleaned up the contacts and put it back in. It still kicks out and the starter spins, Just like the last 2. I pulled the Derby cover off and looked in throught there. The starter gear kicks out, locks into the flywheel and the gear stops. I can still see and hear the starter turning over. Is there some kind of a clutch inside the starter that I can replace or upgrade? Is is a roll pin or something that is letting the starter keep spinning and not the gear when it connects???? Please give me any opinions on what I can do. If anyone has had something similar happen please let me know how you fixed it yourself. Thanks.
The starters are actually pretty good. Its the sprag clutch (overrun clutch) that sucks. I replaced 3 on mine before installing a Lifetime warrenty one. I also heard of you have a chrome inner primary you might need to add an aditional ground strap to get a better ground.

Where did you get a lifetime Overruning clutch? I should be able to put that in myself. I have rebuilt plenty of Starters in my days.

It's usually the damn solonoid plunger sticking. Having the push-button cover saves a lot of hassle when that is what the problem is, as well as a lot of $$.

That's true soft 02, but that only lasts so long and then after a little while you have to open it up and clean up the copper surfaces again. I got tired of that and got the push button. Comes in real handy let me tell ya!
After push starting a fuel injected bike once I wish it was possible to put a kicker on it to. And word to the wise never over tighten the pos side terminal on the starter. It rotated the contact plate and through me for a loop for a day.
