I've had my 1979 FXEF for 27 years, and it's in really nice stock condition. On Tuesday of this week I was rear-ended by a big Ford SUV in city traffic. It knocked me and the bike down hard. The adjuster came this AM and looked the bike over and said "it's probably gonna be totalled." I'm wondering what the "salvage value" of this bike might be, as I intend to keep the bike and fix it myself. There's no frame damage, so I'm just looking at both fenders, one tank, right side turn signals, tail light, pipes, and front brake master cylinder. I totalled up the parts from J&P and it's around $1,500. Any thoughts would be appreciated as I will probably have to deal with this early next week.
Talk to the adjuster before he totalles it,ask him whats the amount that is and ask him to write it up for less then the that by $40-$50 and you can get it fixed with out having to go through getting it inspected and have a salvage tittle.I did that with a car got the parts from junk yard and fixed it.(not to say go to junk yard)Just keep bike in your name and fix it $50 is worth not having to buy it back and the hassle they give you to get it back on the road.
Well, the ins co just called to let me know that my bike was indeed a total loss. I plan to keep the bike and fix it myself. I had insured it for $7,000 stated value, and they said the salvage value is $950. So I'll get a check for $6,050. I think I'll have no problem putting it back to original and have a nice chunk of change left over.
The only thing now is it will have a branded title. However if your keeping it then it really doesn't matter. Only if you decide to sell will that be a factor
