They teach you the basics of riding. Gear (helmets, gloves, etc.), some basic laws, dynamics of different bikes, starting the engine, stopping the engine, clutch friction zone, basic shifting, basic maneuvers (turning, leaning - push right, lean right, go right, etc.), quick stops, riding over obstructions, etc., etc., etc.

There was quite a variety of riding abilities when I took my course. From people who had never been on a bike to ones who had been riding all of their lives. One woman dropped out - she just wasn't able to "get it", but everyone else passed.

If you fail, don't get upset - it's for your own good. Just take the course again.

I must have Harley in my blood, because I don't blame the OP for having trouble on the MSF bikes they use. Those little Nighthawk 250's, I could barely feel when I was in the friction zone unless I had the back brake on. Not like on a Harley where you FEEL it, no problem.
And having the shifting and brake controls tucked right under your seat, again not the default style I'd go with, and my reflexes didn't like them either.
But you somehow gotta grunt through it and do it.
I know my MSF school offered a 1 day course that was strictly 1-on-1 coaching for beginners, Basic Rider Course material. It was a bit more expensive than the normal BRC, but maybe look into that?
