Too fast or too slow all depends on conditions: Road, traffic, weather, vehicle used, driver/rider skill, etc. Posted speed limits are set based on average conditons, with a less than average driver in a less than average vehicle. Sort of a "dumbing down" effect. Also, lower speed limits and their enforcement generates a lot of income for municipalities. Tru safety usually doesn't have a lot of effect on posted limits
Traveling on I-70 across Kansas on a spring afternoon, it's certainly safe to do 100. Traveling on I-25 today, 75 isn't safe.
The German Autobahn is a perfect example. Cruisng speeds are generally over 100, but there are fewer accidents than on a similar US highway. Of course, American drivers are some of the worst around.
A lot of the accidents that have occured in our HOG club, 400 members, it seems like a large % are the result of tire failure. So cranking a high speeds for long periods has an element of risk.
Word of caution is to replace those tires long before they get down to the last 10-20% of wear. That last 10% is where 90& of the tire failures occur.
Speed is a major contributor to accidents. Running with the flow on the interstate is Ok, but excessive speed is just asking for trouble. Your going to travel a lot farther with the same reaction times at greater speed. What's the hurry?
usally for me 55 - 80 depending on highway and traffic. Whem i am on my game and ride the twisties, i'll do 80 down the strights and brake hard into the corners [8D]
Generally I cruise between 70 and 80 on the highways, depending upon traffic and road conditions of course. My bike has a real sweet spot between 75 and 80mph. She just loves to cruise at that speed, and is VERY smooth.
I try to ride with the traffic so on the interstate maybe 80 is tops for me in NC. Around the back roads I ride slower unless I've got traffic - too many nice sights and smells to take in around this part of the country to go too fast.
