Default Octane booster

I truly live in the boondocks!!

There is one stretch of highway on my way home from San Diego, into Baja Sur Mexico, that is devoid of any gas stations.
This stretch is under 250 miles or so, yet has gas sold out of drums from the back of old beat up Toyota pickups. This goes on in a couple of places along the way....most times!!

I am pretty confident that these drums do not contain premium fuel that H/D and everyone else recommends.

It looks like I am going to have to fuel up at one of these "stations".

Question is:.....is it ok to run unleaded fuel (87 octane) for about a 100 miles or so? It's going to be hot.....if that might be a factor.
Or...should I purchase some octane booster to jack up the rating?

H/D sells some octane booster that says it will jack up the rating by 3 points. That should get me close to the magic 91.

Or plan two option:...fill up a 2 liter or 2 quart bottle with the 91 before the "boondocks", stuff it in my bag and blow by the "station"?

Actually I would feel much better having some spare fuel to use just in case....I will be deep into rural Mexico and choices are very very limited.

Thank you

If those are your only choices, I'd say get a couple Sigg fuel bottles and carry some spare gas with you.

If gas is sold out of the back of a Toyota pickup, then it's mobile and you may find yourself out of gas somewhere that the pickup isn't.

You'll be fine running 87 for a bit anyway, but if it makes you feel better, then pick up a couple of the octane boosters. Personally, I'd be more concerned about contaminants in the gas from the drums in the back of the Toyota than what octane rating it was.

{edit}Apparently Sigg no longer makes fuel bottles. MSR does though, in sizes up to 30oz (only $19.99 at Amazon).

My recommendations are:

1) Carry the HD octane booster. Its sold in small bottles and can raise a tank of gas by three points (last I checked, check the specs on this at a HD dealer).

2) You could carry a bit of 91 octane gas with you, but be SURE to carry it in a GAS approved container that you have tested and proven not to leak. Leave a tiny airspace in the canister so that when the temps rise, it won't build too much pressure and leak gas.

Read the details carefully. Octane points are measured in tenths (.1). 87 octane raised 3 points = 87.3 octane.

You are SURE about that?

I just talked to the guys at my dealership and while I know its common for dealership people to be uninformed, they assured me that the HD octane boost would raise a 3.3 gallon tank of 87 to 90 octane.

It even says it raises the number by three RON....one RON wouldn't be a tenth of a point right?

I'm talking about this product:

Cool 89 Octane

I always run 89 Octane in all of my bikes, and have never had any problem. the only place I had to run 87 was out west in the higher altitudes, and then you don't need it. If it ani't knockin' yur Rockin'.

Research the Octane question and you will find the real answers.
