So I just ran a 400 mile trip at 70-75 MPH, in 88 degree weather. When I got off the hwy and began slowing, I noticed my engine was very noisy .... actually sounds like it's full of marbles. Continued on home without incident, but really noisy. Everything else is good ... RPM, no lights, power, shifting, no other symptoms at all. The oil (Harley Syn) is nice and clean, and the level is right where it should be.
This is an 08 FLHP Road King Police - no engine mods, and I turned 12,000 on this trip. Any ideas? And someone tell my why this **** always happens on a Friday at closing time.
you said you have power but i would still do a compression check anyway. Also i would check your primary chain for correct adjustment.I am not so hip on all the sensors and stuff....maybe something is throwing youre way off.---just my 1 cent.
You sure its from the engine and not somthing rattling on the outside?
This is just a shot in the dark without hearing the noise or where it's coming from but maybe just maybe cam chain tensioners? Like I said it's such a crap shoot.
More info needed. Does the noise change with speed, or when the clutch is in. Have you shut the engine of at speed to isolate the noise. Did your gremlin bell fall off?
Yeah I'm sure about that ... it actually sounds like lifters, but I'm not educated enough to be able to say that for sure. The noise fluctuates with engine RPM ... it's clearly engine sound and comes from right under the tank.
And thanks for the input.

yep i think a good shot in the dark.----other than chain issues i dont know what would do that and make you still have full power.Everything else should lead to loss of power.---good luck
Well this is out of sequence and I appreciate all the suggestions. Like I said the noise definitely fluctuates with engine speed .... and at a stop, it's still there but very reduced. I guess I'll limp into the dealer on Monday.
I dont know if you can get this lucky or not but...did you check to see if your air cleaner cover is loose? Happened to me years ago,I thought the motor was coming apart..
