I've heard several folks refer to a jacket's padding, durability and even armor. As protection, what features do you all look for in a leather jacket and how much do these jackets generally cost? I'm also curious about whether or not most folks are emotionally wed to the idea that their jackets need to be bought at a Harley store vs some other brand.
My favoarite leather jacket is the Hein Gericke V Pilot. Heavy leather, zipper vents front and back, padding in elbows and shoulder, zip out vest and form fitting. For cold weather riding I have a grey leather, medium weight First-Gear jacket with no armor, vents front and back and a full jacket liner with a fleece collar built in. Summer time I wear fabric ventilated, AGV sport with armor. In real hot weather (Tucson) I wear a leather vest.
The leather vest is the only item that I have that is Harley. I think their prices are too high. I do feel, even though made in China, their stuff is of good quality. I would be more concerned about fit and function that I would be on who makes it.
Be sure you like the jacket well because if it is a well made jacket you will have it for a very long time.
I think functional jackets wind up being the best looking. Fashion often imitates function. I still have my Schott jacket after 30 years now. People ask me where I got it. They just stare at me when I tell them how old it is and that the place I got it from no longer exists.
