Default Torque wrench question

I was reading my service manual and when it comes to torque setting for bolts and such
everything seems to be in a range, like 14-21 ft lbs as an example. Is this just a range
that you can use? So anything from 14-21 ft lbs is ok? Why don't they just give an exact
seeting to use? Like 18 ft lbs?

I guess they are telling you that anything between the low limit and the upper limit is acceptable. This would be especially true if you were installing a castle nut where you needed to align a hole in the bolt for a cotter pin. Also some manufactures use the lower limit for dry threads and the upper limit for lubricated threads but they usually specify this. In the case where it gives you an upper limit and a lower limit and no other specifications I just split the difference like you mentioned........................BG

The higher in the recommended range you go, the more chance you run of stripping out the fastner. The MoCo gives a range of values because 1) not everyone's equipment indicates the same torque 2) the condition of the fasterners on each bike are subject to other conditions, damage, etc. and 3) not every value is the right one for every bike. Stay to the lower values, use a good thread locker for your fastener (make sure it is the correct one, Locktite red, blue, etc.) and you'll never have to worry about overtightening the fastner.

ui usally go about 1/2 way in between. That 14-21 sounds like drain plugs, i use 20 for that

Isn't this backwards? A lubricated fastener should be torqued LESS because it turns easier. According to my book, an oiled bolt should be torqued 80% of the spec'd value, Dri-lock 203 (similar to Loctite) at 55%.

Exactly. Keeping in mind the habitual loosening of fasteners on our bikes due to vibration, I would err to a lower torque, but use a temporary type threadlocker where possible. Obviously, drain plugs are not one of those places where threadlocker is a great idea, but most everywhere else is. The blue loctite is what I use and now it comes in a handy stick-type dispenser. Much easier to use and virtually no mess. I work on automobiles avery day, and offering up such a broad range for torque values does seem strange, but in my opinion, middle ground seems best.
