Question How to use torque specs in manual?

Does anyone know why there is a range on torque specs and which values to use? Split the difference, high end or low end?

Also anyone know where to get a good torque wrench that will read down to 1 ft-lb? Mine only goes down to 20 ft-lbs so I cant do inch-lbs or foot-lbs below 20.

Sears - Craftsman
As for the range, it is just a recommended range, anywhere between those values is proper according to the specs.

Default Torque Wrenches

Get a 1/4" drive torque wrench...They usually go up to about 200in lbs.

I use a couple of different craftsman torque wrenches ... depending on the settings. Not to hijack, but has anyone tried their torque screw driver???

+1 on the Craftsman torque wrenchs.

If you set the wrench at the lower end of the range, you won't over-tighten anything.

When I did My head gaskets I used the scale kind and clicker, they both read the same. The scale is easier to use I thought and cheaper.

The needle or scale type is definitely cheaper cost wise but greatly accurate. Downside is they can be bulky, not enough clearance for some jobs. Ive got several snap-on click style, which are also accurate but pricey, and occasionally need calibrated. As an industrial mechanic, I generally split the torque a bit to the high side but not exceeding, potentially stretching, breaking fasteners, or stripping threads.

I'd go with a 0-100 in-lb or smaller. I was a mechanic in the Navy, and we were taught to use a wrench where the spec fell in the 10-90% range of the tool. 1ft-lb=12in-lbs. That's <10% on a 0-200.

Just my 2 cents, though.

Default Thanks!

All very good info. I am also curious about the torque screwdriver. Anyone used one?

I go about to the middle, however, on big bolts over 9/16" I go to the near high end. So for instance if the range for the axle nut is 50-55 ft-lbs, I go to 54 ft-lbs. I use craftsmen. And for smaller bolts/nuts, you wanna get an in-lbs wrench.
