Does an extension (3") or adapter (3/8" to 1/4" or 1/2" to 3/8" ) have any affect on torque values delivered/measured by a torque wrench?. In other words if you use a 3" extension on a 3/8" torque wrench is the amount of torque delivered/measured the same as if you didn't use the extension?
Or, if you use a 1/2" to 3/8" reducer on a 1/2" torque wrench is the amount of torque delivered/measured the same as if you used a 1/2" socket?
I find myself using extensions and adapters to get into many of the tight spots and was wondering if anyone actually knew the affect of extensions and/or adapters on torques wrenches.
torque is the same as long as leverage isn't changed. using an adapter that is at an angle away from the torque wrench can require some calculations if it's not 90 degrees to the handle.
Using a straight extension, an adapter for a larger or smaller socket has no effect on how much torque is being applied to the nut/bolt/fastener. It only changes things when you use something that changes that angle that the torque is being applied in. A straight extension, reducer, etc. does not change that angle.
I agree, as long as you aren't changing the length of the handle, then the torque value is the same. I'll usually be sure to hold the head of teh wrench to avoid altering the angle away from 90 degrees as well.
