I think that he is referring to the clamps that attach to the forks that the windshield then attaches to. He is saying that clamping those to the forks may be causing the finish of the forks to be marred.

The clamps are a part of the windshield, and those clamps will clamp onto the forks. There are no brackets or grommets that attach to the forks that the windshield then attaches to.
When the windshield comes off, there is nothing left on the forks. not even brackets.

Oh, ok. My Memphis Shades windshield is the opposite. There is a mounting point that remains on the forks when the windshield is removed.
