I carefully lined the inside of my clamps with masking tape before attaching them to my forks.

Not the OP, but I have a QR windshield on my sporty.
The clamps are a part of the windshield, and those clamps will clamp onto the forks. There are no brackets or grommets that attach to the forks that the windshield then attaches to.
When the windshield comes off, there is nothing left on the forks. not even brackets.

I have a QD windshield. I used it the first winter I had it, but now it only seems to block wind from a shelf in my garage, and seems good at collecting dust.

Oh, ok. My Memphis Shades windshield is the opposite. There is a mounting point that remains on the forks when the windshield is removed.
