Default XR1200 for my wife??

Hi All,

I'm trying to get my wife off the back of my bike and onto her own bike. She's up for the challenge and is ready to go. She's booked for the training course and now we just need to find her a bike.

I found a good deal on a 2009 XR1200. Personally I love the retro look of the bike and it doesn't seem that the riding position is too hunched over like a typical sportbike. It seems to have a more upright riding position. Its her first bike and won't be her last. My plan is to have her learn the fundamentals on the XR and when finances allow we'll upgrade to a touring bike. Can't really afford a touring bike right now and I don't want to buy a used import. Bike won't be used for long trips just cruising around town.

Any thoughts on this idea?

Thanks!
Joe

I bought my wife a 2007 1200 low new. She found a year later that a heritage was a much better and easier to ride. The lower C.O.G. makes all the difference in the world.
You may find it beneficial to read many of the forums and other scoot post about a first bike.

883 Sportster Low would be what I'd recommend. The XR is the "hotrod" of the Sportster family and can be a handful for an inexperienced rider. JMHO.

She's 6' tall and hangs off the 883.

My first bike was a Ninja 1000 (way back in 86) so I don't really follow the 'start small' idea

Part of the bike choice is financial-I can get a smoking deal on the bike.

I work on those bikes and they are a lot of fun. they need a few things to make them comfortable. Yes you do have to ride a little crouched, yes the inseam must be long but at 6', that's cool. People do travel/tour with them and yes you can get a good deal with them. You may have to change them around a bit to make them for her liking but they are damned fun. Just hope she does not check the odometer but you can always blame it on the kids.

I might be seen dragging my knee when she's not around I really like the bike. When she gets tired of it I'm hoping I'll just be able to keep it and get her a touring bike. It will then turn into my toy.

Sounds more like you want a second bike for yourself than a first one for your missus. What does she think of this XR? Does it fit her? Will she be able to comfortably handle it? IMHO, an XR1200 is not a good first bike for anyone. It's tall and top heavy and not nearly as easy to ride as a heritage, for example.
