Default Grand Canyon

Hoping to leave for the Grand Canyon sometime in April from St. Louis. My wife and I were wondering if anyone has any suggestions about best route and/or things to see on the way. Appreciate any input

Make sure you swing through Monument Valley in southern Utah / northern Arizona. I'd also probably try to plan riding through the Ozarks and SE Oklahoma.

I can't offer any helpful info for ya but the wife & I last Saturday ended up viewing about 150 pictures of the Grand Canyon. Some good friends of ours went there for 10 days towards the end of the summer and the pictures were awesome!

I'd love to cruise around that part of the country some day! Make sure you get lots of pic's for us!

You'll find cool routes there and as suggested Utah and Colo. are great tours at least one way of the trip. When you get there, Canyon Village on the S. Rim is a busy place and may be too crowded depending on your preferences. The N. Rim is much higher altitude and in the pines and much cooler/comfortable. If you want to do other than look, then the Park Service has info on the horse rides down to Phantom Ranch at the bottom. And there are cabins at Phantom too.

Lots of nostalgic stuff along old Route 66 near the canyon.

Enjoy

I've boated the length of the canyon on private permits (18 day trips) three times and have another scheduled. The outfitters can take you on 6 day river trips in monster rafts if you have time and some $ for that. It is an ultimate trip in the world.

I used to live in Coloarado and I recommend taking the southern route. The mountains are still succeptible to heavy snows in April (not cool on 2 wheels)...

As has already been noted above, it can and will be darn cool in April in that part of the country. Be prepared for rain and snow is not out of the question. With that said, IMHO you should see:

1. South Rim of the Grand Canyon

2. Canyon de Chelly Nat. Monument (Cliff Dwellings)

3. Monument Valley

4. Hubbel Trading Post (Intersection of US 264 and US 191 on the Navaho Reservation)

5. Meteor Crater (off I-40, 38 miles East of Flagstaff, AZ)

6. Ride the actual old Route 66 from Seligman, AZ to Kingman, AZ. If enough time, go on to Oatman, AZ.

7. If you are that close to Flagstaff, ride the road south thru Sedona Canyon. Sedona is secondary.

8. Glenn Canyon Dam at Page, AZ

There is some of the world's most spectatular desert/mountain riding North of the Grand Canyon in So. Utah, but you would be pushing your luck in April. May or June would be much more enjoyable. The South Rim of the GC is going to be iffy enough. .......... BC

I have only been on the south rim but I hear the north Rim is just awesome
I may be going that way in a week or so depends on the outcome and timing of a family emergency we are dealing with
but if you are planning it in April why not make it around the same time frame as AZ bike week so you will have plenty to do and many places to ride and see
