Thicker is better...look for nice supple thick leather...those thin cheap leather chaps for $60 are crap...

You don't need insulated one, or very expensive ones. The leather will be warm and block the wind. You can get a set from Bikers Den or Leather-up.com for around $50.00 - $70.00 that will be just fine.

I've worn mine (cheap $50) a couple of times with the temps near or at freezing. No problem whatsoever. When it gets into the 20's, I'll just put on a pair of thermals under my work pants and continue to wear my cheapies.

I need to be able to put them on quickly and remove them when I get to work. I won't need them for my ride home. They will most likely reside in my saddlebags.
The buckle goes in the front.

Don't get them so that they are tight. You need a little breathing room so that you have room for different thickness pants, and so that you don't have wrinkle marks in your skin for a week afterwards.

Long underwear and/or fleeced lined jeans. Chaps are collecting dust in the closet.
