I've seen worthless chapters that do nothing but collect your dues, I've seen chapters that end up giving you far more than what you'd have expected.
Just a matter of finding what group of people suits you.

+1 -So you've been kicking ideas around, well join the club, ( no pun intended) but if you keep kicking them around you won't have any anymore. The best group to join is whoever you run into that you feel like riding with. No dues, leave whenever you want and you don''t have to go to meetings.
I've been a member of AMA and ABATE. I really didn't do much with either group. ABATE seems to be more visible on issues that affect bikers (at least in this area) and I enjoy getting their calendar of events.
Who to "join" all depends on what you want out of a "membership". Only way you're going to know is to talk to others in your area that belong to different groups and see if any of em match up.
i don't belong to any clubs at the present time. but in the past i have belonged to a few cager clubs, and a 1/4 midget club.. i have found the same to be true with all clubs.. you have 10% of the people doing all the work and the other 90% doing a 100% of the bitching and not wanting to lift a finger to help remedy issues, whether it be deciding colors for flyers, dates for events, or related work schedules or youth activitys..
like a animal in the road, i steer clear of "clubs" anymore.
