2011/12 winter projects thread...
After doing a lot of research here and getting some good advice from members here, I decided to get courageous and do some mods myself: (1) SE 103 kit; (2) Andrews 54H cams; and (3) Andrews 30-tooth transmission sprocket.
SE 103 kit: Got a brand new kit for $350 including shipping from e-bay (MSRP $700). Sold the air cleaner kit that came with it since I already had that on the bike. Netted about $70 on that sale (also e-bay), so my net cost on the 103 was $280. Got the top end off without much trouble and just received the heads back from Bean at Big Boyz.
Cams: This went pretty smooth also. Had to check in here a couple times for some minor issues and you guys came through quickly. Got the new ones in and felt pretty good about my accomplishment.
Sprocket: F-shnizzle! Shoulda done this one next winter. I was unaware that the doggone transmission sprocket was connected to everything else on the bike. To get the inner primary off, gotta take the starter off. To get the starter off, gotta take the oil tank off (I know, some people can get to both starter bolts without removing the oil tank-I have no idea how). To get the oil tank off, gotta take the battery, electric panel and related stuff out-and I've got a rat's nest of wires with all my add-ons and doo-dads. Electrical stuff out. Oil tank off. Starter out. Eventually got the old trans sprocket out (propane torch and impact driver). Shi!!. Thought for sure I'd have enough room to move the rear axle back enough to pick up the slack in the belt resulting from the smaller sprocket. Not so. Had to order a shorter belt. To get the new belt on, gotta take the rear wheel off. To get the rear wheel off, gotta take the brake pads off. Given my custom rims, to get the wheel off even with the brake pads off, gotta take the rear disc off. To get the belt off, gotta take the pivot shaft partially out. Ordered the new belt almost two weeks ago and it won't be in 'til Tuesday, Nov. 29, which means I lost another weekend to get her done.
May try to get at least the front cylinder/head back on this weekend, and keep the rear off so I have more room to work on getting the starter, etc. back on which, of course, I can't do 'til the belt comes in.
Really, I've enjoyed this monkey business and am glad a couple people here encouraged me to do the work myself. Can't wait to get back on the bike, but it's not looking good before the snow flies.
Not sure which tuner I'll switch to in the Spring, probably TTS or Power Vision. In the meantime, I'll just put a different map on the FuelPak.
Anyone need 96" cylinders/pistons w/ 11k miles, stock cams or 32-tooth trans sprocket? Giddy up!
