He was giving you his opinion on brakes but opinions are like a$$holes _ everybody has one. Now here is mine, dont shy away from a "bigger" bike. Once you develop your basic skills, you wont be happy with a too small motorcycle. I am 5"-6" and 160 lbs and recently rode a 2011 Ultra Classic on a 10 day trip to Colorado.

harley brakes are crap! one of my best upgrades was my front performance machine caliper! big difference, great improvement! with the price you pay for HD i think it is fair to expect better brakes!
My guess was he was a Jap jerk touting the advantages of metric VS. Harley, and couldn't come up with a legit comparo, so he picked on something that would scare a newbie (you) & that was the brakes. But just remembe this:
Owned a Shadow Sabre and put 7500 miles on before I traded for FLHT. No issue with either bike braking. Key is keeping situation awareness and always give yourself an escape. Current bike has ABS w ith 16000 miles but relied on steering out the way rather than extreme braking. If I had to do it over would have gone with a used sportster and traded up after confidence improved

My RG has twin discs up front and ABS option. I've been *hard* on the brakes a few times in death defying situations. Evading a crash or when an animal jumps on the road. No problems, I'm happy with the brake perfomance.
However, one thing I've always wondered about, and 5 minutes with google would probably give me the answer. But I'll bring it up. What about anti-dive forks that some of the jap bikes have?? I thought it was a good idea, but they don't have it on the HDs. Anyone have any comments about the technology?

Harley's will stop just fine, and are not inferior to others. It's all about engineering.
