I have an 07 and installed the CD "plug in" LED inserts. I didn't use an equalizer and it's been about a year and I've had no problems.
I probably would've bought HD LEDs but they didn't offer them for the Bullet style turn signal housings. I did buy the HD LED tail light assembly, though.
I really like the whole setup and I especially like the "no color" feature when they're not on...
A load equalizer is nothing more than a collection (either 2 or 4) of 6 ohm 50w resistors sealed inside a small box. If LED turn signals say that they 'don't need an equalizer', it just means the resistors are already built into the lights.
For DIYers with basic electrical knowledge, 6 ohm 50w resistors cost about a buck apiece at radio shack. Just wire in one resistor parallel with each LED turn signal circuit. In the back, you can usually put the 2 resistors behind the tail light. It's also easy enough to put them under the seat.
As far as heat issues, I think it's because load equalizers have the resistors sealed in a small box that traps the heat. In my experience using separate resistors, they barely get warm, nowhere near hot.
