Question Gas Cap Overfill?

I've found that I can't push it too far by trying to get as much gas in my tank as I want, because the instant I straighten the bike up the gas likes to try to leak out of the gas cap.

Basically, the gas cap just doesn't make a good, tight seal. Anyone else have this same problem?

Instead of just turning the cap til it clicks, push down on it when you are tightening it, til it clicks. You can get a lot better seal with a little push and turn.

That's basically what I've been doing. Seems like a poor design though. I miss that tight seal I had on my Triumph TT600.

I usually stop when the gas gets up to the little hole where you put the nozzle in I don't think and extra cup of gas is gonna get me much further I never run it all the way empty anyway wont it ruin your paint having gas leak out like that

I find with my 07 Heritage if I try to overfill it it will stall out until I run some of the extra fuel out. I now stop filling when fuel gets to about an inch from the hole in the flange.

Hmm. Maybe the 2011s are different. I fill mine up until there gas is even with the hole in the overfill plug. Then I just screw on the cap. Works fine. Maybe my cap just isn't worn out enough yet?

The tank is designed so that you dont fill to the top and has an air space. When the gas changes temp it will expand or contract. Liquid does not compress as good as air.

I can never afford to fill it all the way up.

it really isn't gonna make much difference in the long run if you fill it so full. what's it gonna get you? an extra 200 yds? fill it till its full, without all the gymnastics, and your paint job, and your pants will thank you for it.
