LoL this thread cracks me up. It's not a size thing, I'm 5'11 or so and 250lbs. (or so) and I ride a '74 Sportster that I paid enough for I coulda walked into the dealership and bought a used Fatboy for. The reason I bought it...I *liked* it, it's low slung and has over 1k ccs outta the gate. As far as bein' cheap to modify/fix...you seen the price of a clutch basket or mods for 'em lately....ouch, made my checkbook cry and my credit card melt.
I bought mine on a personal decision, so you'll never hear me actually rip on anyone for thier decision, whether it be a Fatboy, Bagger, or even a rice burner...a lil good natured chit talkin'...oh heck yeah it's gonna happen<g> Anyone looks down at me 'cause of my bike I really don't need to know 'em anyways and they got waaaay too much time on thier hands.
No problem at all with Sportsters , if my/ wifes combined weight was not over 400# I would have bought a Sportster . If my Deuce ever gets stolen or totaled the replacement will most likely be a 1200 Sportster . If somebody had a problem with that , TOO BAD !
When I decided to get a Harley I only thought of getting a sportster. I like the look and size my bike. My dad (RK Police) is starting to razz me a little about it, he's trying to convince me to get a dyna, but I love my bike and the only "upgrade" I might make would be a 1200 conversion. I also say ride what you like and only a loser would put down anothers choice of ride.
Like I've said earlier...I like sportster's and would never put someone down for that (aside from talking ****). With that said, if you mean respected equally, that's one thing I agree with. Some people just don't respect them. Most of them have probably never ridden one. If you mean the bikes are equal, well, no they're not. Just like a Dyna is not the equal of a softail or dresser. It's not a put down in any way, it's kinda like the way cars are at the car dealership......as the price goes up, you get more car and you get more bike (in general). Each one has it's purpose.

I rode an 883 Sporty for about 3 years until I recently traded it in on My FXSTI. Being a Sportster rider, It felt like I was cheating on my wife when I traded it in on a softail. I still miss it.But there are some people out there that dont see a sportster as an equal. Like some other people said most of the time its an ego thing. Even though I dont own a sportster anymore...they will always catch my eye.
Well, before I bought the FB, because Iâd never ridden a Harley, a friend of mine was kind enough to lend me his sporty to âlearnâ on. I got used to the weight and ride etc to get a good feeling for riding a bike in general.
Well now Iâve had the FB for a few weeks and put about 600 miles on it, I think I actually was more comfortable on the Sporty. Seemed easier to stop, easier to maneuver corners and much easier when going real slow.
Donât get me wrong, I love the FB, but the Sporty sure was much easier to ride for me. âŚâŚMaybe thatâs âcuz Iâm a beginner. âŚâŚ.Oh, and Iâm not short; or light.
