Default Dyna vs Softtail

Greetings,

I find myself once again in the market for a HD and am looking forward to tomorrow's '06 announcements.

Having previously owned an FXDX, I’m familiar with the maintenance and performance characteristics of the TC88 engine. However, I’m not familiar with the softtail line and the TC88B engine. So with that in mind, what's the pros/cons of a TC88B model versus the rubber-mounted (Dyna, Touring) model? For example, I'm assuming there's generally less ground clearance with a softtail and the counterbalancer introduces a slight performance penalty. What about maintenance? Which engine is generally easier to work on and reliable?

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum! Sorry I can't help with your questions, for me I just saw the night train and fell in love with it, the rest was irrelivant. Power can always be made, but this softail has plenty of power. (at the dealer getting stage 1 as we speak) I think reliability issues are a thing of the past, you will always get a bad apple, but for the most part all models are very well built. Good luck with your decision, I know it can be a tough one, but you will love which ever model you chose.

Having owned both Dyna and Softail as well as touring, and worked on them all. I would have to say that the dyna is more service friendly because of the shock setup and changing trans oil ,and the oil tank for changing engine oil is more friendly on the dyna also. Performance wise you loose a few HP on the balancers but nothing I would worry about.

Not sure about the HD motors but most balance shaft designs use a bit less flywheel and suffer no meaningfull loss of power or response???

Can't make up your mind? Don't just test ride one, rent one take, ride on all those rodes and situations you would normally ride and see how you like it. I always wanted a Low Rider until I rented one and can say it's not for me.
