Default sturgis advice ???

This will be my 1st time to Sturgis and going for the ride not for the "over the top partying". (I doubt anything can beat a port call in Pattaya Beach Thailand)

After last year when everyone backed out from going, I've decided to just go it alone this year. The plan is knock out a lot of riding so it's not that big of a deal to be "in the action" but I do want to see what all the hype is about.

So what are some good locations to camp at and some can't miss rides in that area?

Thanks for the help & feel free to pm me.

If you want to be "in the action" you cant beat tenting at buffalo chip, if you want to sleep at night stay outside of sturgis in an out lying town. See ya there.

If you're going to stay in Deadwood or Custer you best get your reservations in very soon. Nice rides include the Needles Highway, Custer State Park Loop and of course the Mount Rushmore National Monument. Try and make at least a couple loops through Sturgis to experience the culture. You won't believe how many bikes are up there that week. It's easy to get into "Parade" type traffic everywhere you go. Oh, and if you like trouble that can be found too. But if you stay cool you won't have any problems.

Something to consider. The week prior to Sturgis is about 90% of the fun with about 90% less crowds. Everything is there. About the only thing you would miss is some of the big name bands and about a half- million bikers or so. This makes things like eating and going to the bathroom about a half-million times easier. Find Wall Drug and spend about an hour there. It is a hoot and you won't regret it.

Wow, and I always thought Sturgis WAS about the over the top party! That being said, I would follow HarleyRangers advice and travel up when the party isn't going on and then you can REALLY enjoy the ride! Either way, have fun and if you do decide to hit the party ride, maybe we'll run into each other.

In 2007 we stayed outside of Deadwood at Fish 'N Fry Campground. It was a nice place and really nice owners.

Shade valley is a great camp ground. Had zero complaints about it last year and stay there again this year.

I like to stay in the Keystone/Hill City area to be close to the best riding and if someone is playing at the Chip we camp there for the nite then go back to Hill City the next day. Iron Mt Rd/Needles Hwy and Custer State Park are best ridden in the am before the masses arrive and the parade begins by noon.
