oh also, stay west of town, if you want easy access to the rides, Trying to come from east of town is a nightmare, at least i have never found a really good way to do it.
or stay around deadwood lead, if you are not there to party

Yep. Way more convenient to stay on the west side of town. However, you can stay on the east side of town if you take side streets to get around the main part of town. And, there's stuff on the east side of town you're probably going to want to see regardless (i.e. Bear Butte, Full Throttle Saloon, Buffalo Chip, the new Broken Spoke Saloon, etc.).

If you're staying on the east side of town and need to head south toward Rapid City, the Badlands, Mount Rushmore or Custer State Park, coming in from the east side of town on 34 you'd take a left onto Nellie Street and then a right onto Douglas. From there you can take Douglas all the way to Junction (about 3 blocks south of Main) or take a left on some of the other side streets off of Douglas to get you back to Junction further south. Junction will take you out to I-90.

If you're headed west or north out of Sturgis toward Deadwood or Spearfish (again coming into town from the east on 34) you can take a right onto Sly and then a left onto Woodland. Follow Woodland till it ends, left on 7th St, immediate right onto Williams and that will take you back to Hwy 34 almost at I-90.

Bottom line is, print a map of Sturgis and take side streets whenever possible. After the first couple of times you take the alternate routes it'll become second nature. It's really surprising that more people don't use the side streets. But, I think most folks are trying to get onto Main Street or the big vendors on 34.

alright, gonna bring this back. i'm not sure if a new sturgis thread has been started since but i knew how to find this one since i alreaady posted in it. we still haven't got our reservations. we talked and i think we are going to stay at the buffalo chip. we want to experience the whole party thing, see the bands, etc. i plan to drink excessivly every night. i was on the buffalo chip's website and it said no outside alcohol is allowed in the campground. we will be in a motorhome and i had planned on stocking up on booze for hanging out at camp.

did i read that correctly? is alcohol not allowed to be brought into the campground at all? or just into the events. if that's the case, how strictly is it enforced?

If your going for the ride and not the party, and want to camp...
Fish and Fry south of Deadwood is my spot of choice.

If I was you, I'd travel through Ontario to Sault St Marie, then cross to the states. Better than crossing in southern Ontario and going the Detroit and Chicago areas. I've done that route in my truck, lots of traffic, wouldn't be too interesting on a bike.

I think you're looking at more than 3000km one way, depending on where in Quebec you're starting from. You could do that in a couple long days, that's what I'd do. Last time I went to sturgis I did one 14 hr day to get there. Then you can kick back and relax a bit.
