Default planning for my first ride to Sturgis

1400 miles from pittsburgh to sturgis... me and my bud are riding out...now i sure wanna party a few nights, but i want to hit alot of roads during the days...beartooth pass, rushmore etc.... would i be better off to stay (how far) outside of sturgis? this would allow me to get on the road and see some sights easier im guessing.... then ill venture into sturgis a couple nights for some partying. i guess what im saying is i think i night or 2 will be enough to expierence sturgis.... the rest of my time i wanna see the country...

all advice appreciated...

I am planning on riding out from Lansing, MI, but not til next year, so when you get back let me know how it was! I am trying to get a pretty good size group of us to go next year, so if you decide to go again next year you can pick us up on your way!

Here's some food for thought. Sturgis is of course the nucleus of this mess they call "The Rally" Don't get me wrong, it is a load of fun if you like to empty your wallet. I am going again this year myself. Anyhoo, Sturgis is nicely located to alot of great riding venues, Rushmore, Needles, Devils Tower etc. It's prettypainless to jump on the freeway (I-90) and point it in any direction. But there are many other towns around there to pick from. Just pick one off a map and google it for information on lodging etc. Or live on the edge, roll into town, drink lotsa booze and fall down in the park. If you don't like big ...scratch that...gigantic crowds, then stay out of Sturgis. 'Course if you don't like crowds I wouldn't even go; anything (bars, shops, gas stationsetc), realistically, are going to be full of people within atleast 200 miles. I plan to stay in Sturgis. I have a yard that I have been staying in for many years. Good luck to you!

Hey, well if you are going to do Beartooth Mtn. pass then you definitely wanna stay west of Sturgis. I have been staying in Spearfish for the last 5 years and it's a great place to stay. Eighteen miles from Stugis, close to Spearfish Canyon road and all the other sites west. Just my opinion but make sure you do Beartooth, probably the best ride you will ever take, it's amazing.
If you stay in Spearfish then you can head up through Belle Fousche, catch 212, stop at the Stoneville Saloon for a cold beer and ride to Billings. You can leave Spearfish in the morning, ride to Red Lodge and over the Mountain to Cody in one day, that's a ride but if you don't go to Cody then you miss a big part of the ride and that is Chief Joseph Hwy. I go there every year, enjoy.
