I'm still new to the wonderful world of Harley Davidson. Just recently got my first Harley after a lifetime of riding metric, and, no big surprise, I'm now Harley for good. My bike is an 09 Ultra Classic which I bought from the original owner and I'm getting ready to take it in for the 10K mile service. The only performance mod the bike has on it is Rush slip-ons. I asked the seller if he had the fuel injection remapped due to the change in the exhaust and he replied he hadn't because it wasn't supposed to be necessary with those mufflers. Should I have a race tuner installed while I'm getting it serviced and if so is one brand better than the rest? I'm not necessarily wanting to throw tons of cash at the bike to squeeze out the maximum performance but at the same time I plan on owning this bike for a very long time so I'd like to do the mods that make sense for the long haul. Any advise or opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dave
You don't need a tuner if all the previous owner did was change out the slip-ons. Change the head pipe and/or the air cleaner and it should be remapped.
Thanks for the response JR. The original owner put a "Live To Ride" chrome cover over the air filter but I think the filter is still factory so I guess he was right. Could you tell a significant difference adding the SE stuff to yours? I have a diesel truck with an aftermarket air intake and tuner and it's an amazing improvement so I've wondered if this stuff did the same for the Harley.
Search "Stage One". You'll find a lot info on that here. A pipe, filter, and tune will wake that bike up quite a bit. In stock form the 96 is pretty anemic. Not that it is meant to be fast, but if you're used to other bikes, it will get to you sooner or later. I went to a 107 kit and pumped about 50% more power into mine which was much needed imo.
Congrats on a nice ride. The 09s are very nice bikes.
Try to find out what size baffles are in the mufflers. The 2.00" and 1.75" are the most popular for the 2009 model and tuning is usually not required for stock engines but still recommended. If the part number is 15301-200, the 200 indicates a 2.00" baffle.

Dave, true what you are being told. With the only performance mod being Rush slip ons, a tuner & remap is not something you need for longevity reasons. You may be surprised though how much better the bike will run if you go with the stage 1 and a good tune. The late model bikes are greatly de-tuned from the factory. If you decide go that route I would reccomend the TTS tuner over the SE tuner. Even more important than the brand tuner is finding someone that truely knows what they are doing & will take the time to do it right. Dont take for granted because your local dealership has a dyno & sells tuners that they have a qualified tech to do the tune. Techs that actually know what they are doing are much more rare than most realize. Take your time & do alot of reseach in order to save money, and actually get what you pay for. Do as much of the work yourself as you can.
Thanks for the comments guys. I've worked some overtime lately so maybe my 10K mile service will go a little past just maintenance. I'll do some research on Stage 1 in general as well as trying to get some background on the tech I was planning on using for the work.

My vote is that you add the SE aircleaner and a SERT. Especially if you plan on keeping it for a while. Mapped properly, it will feel like a totally different bike.
