Gents,
I have been looking at a pair of Danners or Red Wing Heritage lace up boots. The Danners have a Vibram outsole and the Red Wings don't say much about the soles. Does anyone have experience with these boots around hot pipes?
I see they list Danner at least on their website. I usually call rather than e-mail because one answer usually brings me to three followup questions and thats easier on the phone.
So one of the best things about Danner is the recrafting service. A bit expense for a boot (330.00 for the Ft Lewis I have) but I have put them through the harshest of tests when I wore them in the USMC. I deployed with them, gone through various military survival schools, mountain warfare leadership course etc etc. specifically these boots: http://www.danner.com/boots/fort-lew...orm-boots.html
They keep my feet warm and dry and are as durable as you could want. Look in to the recrafting service. After the initial outlay of cash for these you can send them to Danner and they will basically remake the boots for you and when you get them back they are basically as new.
I have 2 pair of the FT lewis and 1 pair of the leather/textile "uniform boot" I have had 1 pair of the Ft Lewis since they first came out. I could have sworn they had a Ft Lewis at 600g without steel toe. They had another boot very similar to this can't find on the site. If you take care of your boots keep them clean and polished to keep the leather oiled and "supple" and with the recrafting I don't see a need to ever buy another pair
The only pair that didn't last too long were a pair that had to be cut off of me when I got busted up in Eastern Africa.
For 180 bucks they will do the following:
Supreme Package
Replace liner
Replace insole
Replace midsole
Replace outsole
Replace shank**
Replace heel counter
Repair stitching as needed
Replace hardware as needed
Recondition, clean, and polish leather

I have had 3 pairs of red wings in my life. I work in them everyday. Toughest boot I have ever owned. There is a 7 page thread on red wing boots. Try searching for it.
The Navy issued me the Danner Acadia boots and I've put them through all kinds of training/deployments without any issues...a little polish and they clean up pretty nice too. IMO, they are better motorcycle boots than military boots (heavy with nice big soles)!
