OAB you don't know all the details. Maybe they love him and know that he is a danger to himself and others. Does the OP know why they wanted him to stop riding?
Yeah the guy is 82...now my Dad is 86 and my Step Mother took his car 3 years ago...if he had his Harley he would kill himself on it within a week and maybe take out 2 or 3 innocents....so maybe the OP just unleashed HELL on wheels.
The Mrs. and I drove 160 miles one way to see a Heritage we found on craigslist. The dude selling it was an 82 year old man whos wife and daughter put the bike up for sale...he doesn't want to sell it. He got a tear in his eye when I offered just $200 less than his $8k asking price...then shook his head and said 'nope'. I smiled and told him now he has an excuse to keep the bike, we couldnt agree on the price. We shook hands and parted ways...with tears in my eyes this time. This guy, Jim, is my definition of a biker. Here's to hoping that nobody will buy his bike and he can keep it forever. We can all find other bikes to enjoy, just not his.
Good for you. I'd like to tell his busybody wife and daughter to go boil their heads. He obviously loves his ride. Perhaps he would just like to go in the garage with a beer and stare at it.
I have no idea of why his wife or daughter want him to sell his bike but I could see the same resistance from my own family at that age. My Father is 80 years young as of two weeks ago. Try selling his boat. He was over last week checking on me and informed me he is looking for a bigger boat. My Fathers wife made a statement towards him fishing alone a couple of months ago. He informed her that he was getting a bigger boat for comfort and that if he died fishing ----he died doing something he loves. He also informed her that he does what he wants. He told me that if he had stayed riding into his old age he would still be riding but he didn't want to start fresh. Any woman or kin that come between me and my motorcycles are history--now and then. If they can prove in court that he is incapable of making decisions they can overturn his will.

Thanks for all the support on this! It's great to see that there are still good people in the world who wouldn't buy an old-timers bike if the OT didn't want to sell it.
This bike is still posted on CL. He has my # if HE wants to sell it I'd buy it.
I like the beer in the garage idea someone suggested, maybe I'll stop by if I'm that way....
Family always want to look out for their elders but sometime forget that it's what keeps them going! My father in law 74yrs young is a rancher, up at 4AM, horse saddled and loaded by 6AM, all the children and their wives/husbands tried forcing him into selling everything and retire! My wife and I did not agree told them thats what keeps him going! 10yrs later still loading that horse and heading out! All the family is thankful for our supporting him!
Spent the weekend looking at bikes again. Didn't find anything I liked or could afford Those of you shopping the used market know what I mean.
Jim had posted his bike up for sale again and I called him. He said he was to glad to hear from me and would be happy if I bought his bike. He said he wanted me to have his Heritage and was glad nobody else had made him an offer. We made the deal for his full asking price.
Before leaving I made sure he has my number and we agreed on visitation rights and a ride around the block anytime he wants to. He is a great guy and I think we will be friends for a long, long time.
I didn't leave Jim without a bike. He as a V-Star that he said will work perfect for him to putt around on.
Here's a picture of Me, Jim and the Heritage.

I kinda had feeling that you'd have ultimately owned that bike, somewhere in the future.
It happened sooner, glad it worked out for both of you. You deserved it, given the way you handled the situation the first time. Happy ending to a nice story.
P.S. : very beautiful bike btw
