I still dont think its a cam ......oil in the jugs and another compression test would have maybe answered something . compression checker doesn't get stuck at 90 ??
throttle cable is opening carb all the way ? never know, could be something goofy. was always taught by my old man , always check the simple stuff first.
if those are the pipes you are running , from one evo owner to another , your engine wont never reach potental with open short pipes

My pops said the exact same thing when he saw the motor apart and I didn't have a definate answer why. I'm gonna pop the valves out tonight an clean em up, new guide seals and a bit of cleaning in the ports, go around the pushrods again, rings an a quick honing an see what I have. I am going to have the local eyeball the cam tonight as well. The soft top end and good rings has me baffled but I'm running out of things to check so It'll surface before the weekend is over. I will check my tester too for the hell of it. The pipes are long as hell too, an the last step is only 2", for about the last 1.5' of the pipe. Check out my album, said Heritage is the one with gold an black flames. Pipes were free too!

you may fix it and never know what the problem was lol...hope you do better than I do when I'm into my engine....somehow it always seems like a good time to "upgrade" while I'm in there....which means more money ....

Well guys, believe I found a big part of the problem. Not 1 of the valves is making a solid seal. Theres way to much carbon built up around the edge in little tiny spots and it apears to have been seeping by about half of the valve. Looks like I'm going to have to freshen them up. And a port job since they are off already. **** zukeeper, ur right, more $$$. Rings showed up last night and gaskets will be here today, snow coming end of the week so with luck we'll have her runnin this time next week. Appreciate the hell out of all the info, learned a ton in the last couple weeks! I'll let ya'll know how she runs. Any tips on the right way to break it in? I was always of the school of break em in how ya ride em, but that seems a bit harsh for this ol girl.

sounds good....valve job and new rings should help/fix your problem....if ya check pressure again, would like to know what your new readin is.....as far as break in....i've never done much of anything special.....i take it kinda easy for the first 10 miles or so just to see if it all holds together.....ie..no strange knocks or pings....and nothing fallin off behind you....if she's ok, i ride as usual....

I don't believe in break in like you ride it. I believe in good warm up. Some miles at good range of rpm with no high rpms or lugging the engine. Oil change after five hundred miles. Another five hundred miles highway speeds. Oil change than ride it like normal. I do not load up new, rebuilt, or newly modified engines till they have gone through a few heat cycles. JMO

For rings only break in is go easy on her for 50 miles just so all the new stuff can get acquainted then ride it . If you do a bore & pistons then you play the baby it game for a while if you want to live a nice long life doing what it's supposed to . I do a lot R&R work for for guys who believe your style is best , it isn't . Good luck bud I hate chasing gremlins like your doing but some bikes you never find out what it was .

If you keep the pipes think about a set of revision cones there cheap and will help but will take a little playing with the carb to get it right .

i roll across iowa on I-80 fairly often and then go up I-29 to hit I-90. Iowa is one of the worst states for weather and it also seems that the wind NEVER stops blowing there. my condolences.
