Haven't done the Rider's Edge class. Have done the MSF course twice over 25 years or so in between. The first time as a new, inexperienced rider. The second as a long time rider with a buddy who was just getting into bikes. Benefitted both times. Would live to take their experienced rider course but leery about using/damaging my own bike. I'd have her take the MSF course for the money and then evaluate what she learned and how she is riding before you both decide on the high dollar HD course.
Thanks for the input. I wasnt sure if there was some extra training put in Riders edge making it cost more. Just looks like money maker for them. Think we will go with MSF course through college and save the dough for goodies to put on bike.
I believe the material is the same. The MSF had a few different models of bikes buy the RE only used the Buell blast.
In Illinois the class is (or was a couple years ago) $20. If you pass you could get you $20 back, or donate it and get a T-shirt.
One of the local dealers charges $350 for the riders edge course which is taught where the MSF course is taught. From what I can tell they are trying to sell students gear and accesories while they take the course. What a joke! Oh and they give a tour of the dealer too. My wife is signed up for the MSF course for $225 for next weekend at the same place.
I took the MSF in Hawaii. Excellent course and learned a few more things. Only reason I took it was that you didn't have to take the riding test, which on a heavy Harley, is difficult to pass. Try doing a figure 8 in a parking space without putting a foot down.
I took the MSF course offered by the LA State Police for $100 which included the Honda Rebel ($25 in you provide your own under 500 cc ride). They did a great job teaching fundamentals to new riders (me) and former riders wanting to get back in the saddle. I've had many friends who've taken the Riders Edge course and have spoken extremely well of it, but the MSF worked great for me. Good luck.
