I can't speak about the ailerons but the standard HD grips that come on the Limited are some nice grips. I have been using mine all winter with no issues. They adjust from 1 to 6; I usually use #3 above that they cook. Anyhow, not sure if you can get these or not, if so I would recommend them. I have tried some aftermarkets on another bike and really didn't care for them.
I installed a set on my '06 in the fall of '06. Each year, I had to turn them up slightly higher to get the same heat, until they finally burned out after four years. I have since intstalled Heat Demons.
The install was not that bad. First, you do not have to remove the gas tank....just wire tie the lead to the existing wire harness under the left side of the tank. To fish the handle bars, take some heavy cord string, such as drapery cord, and use an air compressor to blow it through the handlebars, tie on the wires, and carefully pull them through.
You also have to take out a plastic slug out of the fuse box, and install a fuse. Piece of cake. Just follow the directions. However, my directions failed to mention the ground wire.....the black wire which goes to the negative post on the battery.
I installed them in my 09 ultra. they are better than nothing for sure but the Heat Deamons are 10 times better ( had them in my 05), but at the time I couldn't find a TBW heat demon so i put in the hd. The instructions were the worst I ever saw and made the job way harder than it had to be. I eventually got heated warm and safe gloves to match my heated liner. Now that is 100%.
having said this, the HD heated grips are better than nothing on a cold day for sure. have them in a couple years and they still work
Here is a picture of what happens when the inner and outer parts come apart. I can see no way to wrap the wires back inside the outer and get the inner back in as the fit is tight. I have tried many times.
BTW this was one of the newer "improved"versions purchased in 2009.
I have had the HD grips on both of my Ultra's. Never had an issue with them. They work great, and up here in ND we get plenty of opportunities to use them.
The pre-08 heated grips had problems. Since Harley went with fly-by-wire, the heated grips were redesigned. I had 2 pair that were flawless.
Any stories of failures of 08-later Harley heated grips? I haven't heard of any.
I had the dealer install them on my 09 prior to delivery. They worked for a while then it got to where I had to turn them all the way up just to get any heat at all. I had the fairing cover off for some reason and noticed they had just spliced the power lead on to the cigarette lighter wire, rather than take it to the battery as per the instructions, and left the excess wire stuffed in there. I pitched a bitch so they did replace the grips and wired the new ones correctly. These have worked fine.
I wouldn't have a new bike w/o them. When your body starts to become even slightly chilled it slows down circulation to the extremities in effort to keep your body core temp from dropping. Holding on to something warm makes a big difference, more than I would have thought. Even when it's just cool, maybe 60 degrees, I'll have them on low wearing light gloves.
Most heated grips will only heat, yes you guess it "your grip" your palms.
The issue is temp. and wind. The best way to keep your fingers warm is to cut the wind and control the temp. A wind deflector works pretty good but looks crappy. Depending on your temp and wind I would try heated grips first. Or you can move to the desert.
Good luck

We had the heated grips installed on our fleet of '08 EG police bikes. Out of 28 bikes most, if not all, have had issues ranging from complete failure to inadequate or uneven heating. Quite a few never worked right from the factory, but HD said they were "within normal operating limits". Mine provide so little heat that are pretty near useless. And yes, the grip on one side slid off at one point. They are poorly made and unreliable. The aftermaket heated grips we had on the prvious fleet of '05 RK's worked great, and we still have a few in service after 7 years.
Maybe HD improved their heated grips since '08, but our experience tells me that they are a waste of money. I've seen a lot of posts recommending Heat Demons. Maybe look into those.
I havn't really heard much positive about the HD heated grips so I ended up getting heated gloves. With the gloves there is heat all around your hands instead of just on your palms. Just my 2 cents
