Does anyone know when Smugglers Notch in Vermont - Route 108 between Jeffersonville and Stowe - is open? Is it seasonally variable or set, and if seasonally variable, is there a way to check in advance if open?
I am planning a long trip, hopefully with the future father-in-law (also a Harley nut), through the NH White Mtns and the VT mountains. I went over the pass in 2010, in May, but went through from the Jeffersonville side, but at same time in 2011 the road from the Stowe side was closed. In 2010 I got the impression I was not "supposed to be there"!
Can the road be passed on a bike, even if "closed" (notwithstanding heaps of snow of course)?
Any hints appreciated, for NH and VT rides. I have been to both but there are always hidden gems known to locals. I gave the guy a grand-daughter but great roads will seal the deal!
Nolabel-Not 100% sure but in 2011 many of the roads in Vermont/New Hampshire were close due to all the rain from that hurricane that blew up the coast.Dont think any of the roads up in that area are closed because of the time of year.
Here's my hint. Stay away from Rt 114 along the border and 102 along the NH border. They are pot holed, artillery shelled pieces of $#!+. I've had my guts beat out riding an 1150 G/S. That's like five times the suspention of a Harley.
The North East Kingdom area of Vermont gets very few tax dollars for road maintenance. If it's hot, watch out for the tar snakes.
