Unhappy 2005 Elect. Gl. Classic Radio Mistery

I posted this in the Touring section also, but anyway this past weekend I decided to swap my stock handle bars for the KHROME WERKS 2" OVER SWEEPER BARS, and during the process I had to remove the stock AM/FM/Cd radio unit, fairly easy-two bolts on each side, wiring harness plug, and antena cable. Once I got the new handle bars installed along with a new longer clutch cable, I installed the stock radio back in the same way it was removed, got everything back on, turned the ign. switch on, everything works EXCEPT THE RADIO, THE CLOCK DON'T EVEN LIGHT UP.
Yesterday I removed the front fairing back out, pulled the radio harness plug out, all the pins in the radio unit looked OK, checked the two fuses, both were OK, tested the radio harness plug, and two of the wires on it are hot, so I don't have another clue on this mistery.
It sucks to have to ride all the way to Fla. in a couple of weeks with nothing to listen to.

That sucks. It's also the reason my bikes are simple...I don't need the aggravation that complications invariably bring.

I' m sure he found that very helpful in solving his problem.

Did you check all of the fuses with a test light?...all of your connections?...Ground wires that are on the top triple tree clamp? Is there anything else on the bike not working?

If two of the wires are hot, that means they might be shorting to ground somewhere, or the wires might be frayed or cut down to just one or two strands. Try to follow the wires and see if there is a rub or pinch somewhere. Especially check where the wires might be laying against a metal bracket or the frame.

Did you internally wire the bars? If so, and one of the pins was switched, it might ground something, causing it to get hot. Poster above wondered if other functions don't work, for the same reason.

I would double check all the pin positions using the wiring diagram in the manual.

It's easy to get stuff switched if you're looking at the connector from the top in the diagram and from the bottom when you are putting it together.

Try running a ground wire from the case of the radio to the frame. You may have a bad ground.

2/29/12 UPDATE:
Everything else on the bike such as the headlight-both high and low beam, passing lamps, blinkers, tour-pack side lights, horn, dash lights, all of this works, and the bike starts right up and runs great. Not only did the last writer-FLAMED FXR, but several others also said it sound like a bad ground. I checked all the fuses-all were good, I did not run the wires inside the handle bars, I left them out like it was with the stock bars, checked all the wires under the fairing, nothing is burned or grouded to a bracket or anything else. So I did what the last writer said, ran a test wire from the frame near the crash-bar to the body-casing of the radio unit itself, turned the ign. switch on, and guess what, THE CLOCK LIT UP, TURNED ON THE RADIO AND IT WORKED!, EVEN THE CD WORKED! Mistery solved, BAD GROUND.
Now comes the big question: Should I go through the trouble of removing the unit all over again to try to find where I missed the ground wire at, or should I leave it in and run me a new ground wire from the frame to the radio casing? Thanks to everyone for helping me solve this issue.

If you have a manual, it will tell/show you if there is a ground strap, and where it should be. Worst case is you can just run another ground strap. Glad you figured it out!

Smile Problem solved!

2/29/12
Rode to work this morn., sucked not being able to listen to the traffic reports in Atlanta, or stare at the dash to see the clock, but overall not a bad ride. While at work on my first break I called my Indy mechanic to see if he was going to be at his shop in the afternoon, and explained to him what was going on and what I thought it might be and told him what time I might get there, he said sure, bring it in I'll take a look at it.
Left work at 2:10PM, rode from North Atlanta all the way to West Ga.(Polk Co.) where the Indy Shop is located, arrived there just before 3:30PM, the mechanic had just finished doing some work on a DYNA, came to my bike, took the front fairing out, got to looking at all the maze of harnesses and other wires, and within seconds spotted the problem: The ground wire coming from the triple tree was disconnected, he showed it to me, he then plugged it in, turned the ign. switch on, and sure enough the clock was on, the radio and the CD both worked, problem solved! He then put the fairing back on, and we talked for a few min., then I asked the man what I owed him, and he said your a regular customer, so don't worry about it, this is a very decent and well respected Indy Shop.
Finally, I left there and rode home to Douglasville, Ga. and listened to my favorite stations in the area all the way! End of story.
