I recently sold my metric and am looking at bringing an FLHR up from the US to Canada.
I've done a bit of searching, but haven't been able to find the answer to this question:
If I purchase a used Road King from a Harley dealer in the US, do I need to pay state taxes on my purchase?
I called a couple of dealers close to the border and they told me that if the ship the bike to me I can avoid state tax, but if I ride it, I need to pay.
My preference is to ride, but if I need to pay state tax on top of purchase price, most of the savings will be lost.
I have imported an SUV (Dealer, drove it home with temp plates) and a bike (private, trailered it home) from Ohio and did not pay tax. Bought a new car (dealer, drove it home, temp plates) in New York and did not pay tax. If the dealer is telling you, you have to pay tax they don't know the process.
