IMO the Best Motor the Co. ever made.

Call it The Re Evolution. Copyright.

My 84 FXST was the Best Harley I ever owned.
Bone stock and 75,000 miles when I sold it, bet it still runs.

If they built it, would you buy it?
Not a chance.

If they built a new HD which bore a strong resemblance to an Evo generation bike with a modern engine, transmission and brakes, ...oh wait, they already do.

Seriously man - why would you want a freshly made bike with all the headaches of an older one? Besides, be cheaper to build it yourself I suspect.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but since when did HD care about low power output, high maintenance and weight?

All kidding aside, belt is the way to go for our type of bikes. Sport bike? Yeah, probably want the chain for sprocket changes and such, but touring bike? I want the reliability.

Interesting comments. You know there is a lot of discussion about old school, tradition, Retro. The Shovel, Pan, Ironhead these are the cult bikes we all love, or at least I do.

For a Good Basic Rider I have an affinity for the Evo. Less is More. Yes a belt drive is hard to beat, agreed. I never broke a chain in my life, O rings last and it takes a few seconds to clean and lube.

All Sport bikes use chain drive, my Busa would do 180 + mph no worry. Gear change, change a sprocket, simple and ez.

6 and now 8 speed automatic tranny in my car ,fine. 6 speed stick IMO sucks, give me my Hurst 4 speed. Same on a bike, 4 speed worked for me.

FI yep a pretty cool deal. Carb so simple even I can rebuild, jet and tune. The Evo runs cool with an oil cooler I cruised Main Street never a worry, never had to run on 1 cylinder.

My FXR, cam, branch heads, TH, 80ci. would kick ***. New is good and ultimately HD will water cool and shaft drive and gyro their bikes.

I still love the Basics. If HD would build another Evo Powered FXR I think it would sell in a heart beat. They did it in 1999. Forget MTV, I want my E V O .

honorsdaddy - Since they realized that it was worth the retooling cost to convert all their bikes to belts.

The EVO was a good motor for HD and for its time, the same way that Chryser's slant 6 was a good motor. But technology moves forward, and the EVO's tome is past. Not dissing it, and as a crate engine on a restoration you can't go wrong. I cut my teeth riding a '92 FXRP with the EVO, and that motor had 38,000 hard city only miles on it. Great bike with a great motor. But time and technology move on.

Let me pass a bit of education along on the 4 & 5 speed gear boxes . Final ratio is the exact same on both of them so there is no gain from that angle . Main reason HD switched up was to get a lower first and close up the ratios a bit so no " gap " between second & 3rd like the dresser versions of the 4 speed had . They did this because the evo flywheels had the weight cut by almost half so the low end torque off the line was gutted and the closer ratio 5 box helped overcome that by making you rev the engine a bit higher and shifting more often .

5 speed gear box is fixed you can't change the ratios unlike the 4 which had 3 different 1st /2nd gear ratio sets you could play with to hit your bikes optimal sweet spot , 3.00-1 ( heavy dresser) , 2.60-1 ( FLH ) or 2.44-1 a long legged set for lighter FX bikes . Going the generic one size fits all 5 box cut assembly cost for the moco big time . Of course these saving didn't passed along to you the consumer and personally I don't like the way they shift .
