Just thinking, maybe the front cylinder head temp sensor is tied in with cold start circuit and the sensor has gone bad. This might in turn make the ECM think the head is always cold and needs to go in the warm up high idle.
I read on the sportster section that if you don't let your bike wind down all the way to idle before you shut it off it'll idle high the next time out.
You seem backwards on the ECM reset at least according the this guy.
Same experience here as RDSS. Don't know if it's the same as my 08 fly by wire throttle reset, but try this. For the 08 Street Glide (when the idle becomes confused and runs up to 12-15 hundred due to shut off while at high rpm)
Turn your "run" switch to on and leave it on. Then turn main main power (key) on for 8 seconds / off for 4 seconds / repeat 3 more times without delay. (honestly, this might be one more cycle than necessary, but I cant recall for sure)
on 8 seconds
off 4 seconds
on 8 seconds
off 4 seconds
on 8 seconds
off 4 seconds
on 8 seconds
off
start the motor. If you have the same idle control logic ... you will have just reset your idle speed to factory. Cure = let it idle down before shutting it off. Again ... it works on my 08 street glide. Not sure about your bike.
Dealer has a chip download but will tell you that it can introduce lag in throttle repsonse. I chose to pass on the d/l.
I had that on my 06 Lowrider. I lubed the throttle cables at both ends and made sure the return was going all the way to the stop. I ended up taking out some slack from the cable as it stretched after about 2 years. If you have drive by wire then this wont work.
I have an idle issue with my '10 Street Bob, just shy of 15k miles if that matters. It wants to idle really fast most of the time. I don't know how fast, because I don't have a tach. If I put it in 1st gear it "idles" at or above 20mph, my first gear over all ratio is 9.311:1, so what rpm would that be?
It started doing this a couple weeks ago. I thought I just needed to get out and let everything get up to temp and it would settle down. Well, it did for a few minutes today, then after I "got on it" a little it was high again. I took it to a local chopper shop, one of the mechanics thinks its the idle air control motor. We pulled the air cleaner off, and when he plugged the hole where the motor goes and it immediately went to normal idle speed, pull the finger off the hole and it went right back up.
I read another thread about idle problems and a guy said he changed several things to include the idle control motor without success and ended up being the throttle position sensor. I went a head and order both parts, being over here and paying shipping anyway I figured I'd be better off having both of them in hand when I try to fix it again.
I've also read that the computer is confused from the key being turned off with high motor speed. That only happened after it decided to idle way high. I tried the on 4/off 8 second trick to reset the computer, it didn't do anything.
Anyone have experience with this?
Yes. If you tried cleaning the IAC then Id change the TPS. Like 28 bucks ant two screws. Head sensor is another posibility too but that costs more. Been through 3 TPS's in 100k. Really easy fix if you want to through parts at it.

I've got an '04 that would idle high intermitently and it was the shaft in the throttle body was cracked. had to replace throttle body.
I hope it's not that.

Thanks, that sounds about how fast the motor is turning, it also goes up some when the clutch is pulled in too.

Yep, saw that hole, that's the one we plugged with a finger and the idle went to normal, then back up when the finger was removed. We sprayed carb cleaner in there, but it didn't help...that's why the mechanic thinks the idle control valve motor is bad. I order both one of those and a TPS, going to change the ICVM first.

Hmm, 3 in 100k, they don't sound very reliable, but at least they aren't too expensive. I have both ordered, so we'll see which one (if either) fix it.
Thanks for all the replies everyone, much appreciated. Hopefully it will be an easy (cheap) fix.
