For me I like HOG. Even though I ride mainly by myself or a few friends, we have a great chapter that is pretty active. I don't do the meetings and only attend a couple rides per year. They always have something going on from events at dealer, cookouts, and short & long rides. The roadside assistance is nice to have even though I never had to use it. Discount from AT&T saves me $81.60 a yr. and 15% discount @ dealer. When all is said and done - I come out ahead. Well worth the life membership fee.
Thanks guys for all the input, it sounds like it may be worth it just to meet some people. But I would have to become a member of HOG then check out the local chapters right? Sounds a little backwards to me, usually you meet the chapter and see if you want to ride with them..
Mine has been free since mid 06 and is good until mid 14.
I have used it for minor things like the infield parking and grand stand seating for the legends race during bike week. Lemonade, pop corn and pool games at Datona also. The Hog pins for the rallies, and the annual badges and pins and the tour atlas.
The same for Sturgis and other rallies. However with HD going on the cheap and not renting the civic centers at the various rallies which then means no where to sit for a while in an air conditioned building sipping lemonade, eating pop corn and visiting with others. I did not realize how much I enjoyed it until HD went with just a tent at events.
In my thinking a "Premium" builder should only do premium things and not on the cheap.
So to me HOG has diminished value and respect from me.
If and when my ongoing free memberships expire, I will not purchase HOG.
i was online trying to figure this out myself. i got the first year membership for free when i bought my bike in june last year. im taking a cross country trip in july of this year. the only way i can find online that its worth it to have the membership is if you have at&t cell, which i dont. triple A is the way to go if you want to get roadside and discounts. they have a whole catalog of discounts whereas HOG seems to only be best western and at&t. HOG is better if you like to wear all the leather and hang out at your dealership i guess? haha i dont know. personaly i usually ride alone or with my friends that dont necessarily have harleys. my problem resolved itself though because i just glanced at my card and they gave me until july 2012 so im gonna use it if i need it and then not renew

I save 200 bucks a year on AT&T cell and wireless internet services. That, plus discounts on insurance, hotels, and roadside assistance, are more than worth the yearly full membership. The rag is just a bonus.I am active in my local HOG chapter, also.
