Default HOG is it worth it??

I just got my bike 2 weeks ago and have recently relocated, the salesman was telling me about HOG. It seems pretty interesting since I don't know anyone down here. I was wanted to get you guys input and see if it was worth it, pros and cons, etc..

Welcome. I just renewed tonight as a matter of fact. Can't hurt, might help. Used it once a few years back when my battery died at a gas station. Just never know ...

If you like the travel magazine...then I guess so.

A lot of people think so, I'm not one of them.
Since you're in a new area, it might be a good way to get to know some other riders.

I have a HOG membership. You can get a decent discount on certain hotels, AT&T cell service, and some other things. Plus I have used the roadside assistance 3 times.

I am not a member of a local chapter though. The one closest to me just didn't look to inviting to me. Seemed like a bunch of old guys on baggers going out to eat all the time

In my opinion, NO.
If I were you, I would go to some AMA sponsored events in your area to get familiar with the AMA clubs in that District. Most AMA clubs are very friendly and you may even find one you would like to prospect for. At least here you earn your membership, not just buying it and a patch.
If you join AMA, they have roadside assistance.

No but I renew it every time anyways. The magazine is nice but I rely on my AAA Plust/RV if I need help. I heard HOG road service sucks.

Nope, it isn't worth it. My insurance covers roadside assistance at a much lower price. I get discounted rooms by signing up on a points system at each chain.

Wife and I recently relocated to an area where we knew absolutely nobody so I joined HOG just to meet some of the local riders and start to learn my away around the area. There's a lot of stuff about HOG that I can't say I like very much but, we've met a bunch of very nice folks this way. I'd recommend signing up for a year and if it turns out it's not your thing, simply don't renew.

Well, as you can see already, you're likely to get many different viewpoints.

I renew every year for the main reason that I really enjoy the local chapter I belong to (you have to be a HOG member to join a local chapter). My chapter is very active. We have around 200-250 members and regularly see 80+ at the monthly meetings. For me, it was a great way to meet other riders. I attend the meetings and have taken many of the rides organized through the chapter. This year, there is a ride planned almost every weekend from the beginning of May through the end of October, ranging from day-long to three days each. You get to see some great routes and points of interest I wouldn't otherwise see, or even know about.

As far as national HOG, I don't find the benefits that impressive. I get a slight discount on my mc insurance which I wouldn't otherwise get - so that's good. You also get a discount at Best Western, but I find I can get the same or even better rates just by booking online. I have never used the roadside service, but was on a 2-day trip last summer when a member of our group (local HOG chapter) went down. The roadside service was very helpful. I think the HOG magazine is well done and enjoy reading it.

I went on a national HOG ride last summer (Rock, Rhythm & Blues Tour) which started in New Orleans and ended in Cleveland. That was a great trip, but not something I will be able to do again anytime soon. Couldn't have done that without the HOG membership.

You also have to be a HOG member if you want to take part in the state HOG rallies. I'm going to my third this year. They're okay, a bit boring, but fairly inexpensive and worth the rides.

So, my suggestion is don't join if you're just hoping for some fringe benefits (roadside, hotels, etc.). If, on the other hand, the local chapter sounds interesting to you, then, in my view, it's well worth the affordable cost.
