Default Checking Cam Chain Tensioners.....

Just curious if it's a good idea to drain the oil before pulling off the cam cover. Anybody pulled the cover off without draining oil? Thanks!

I checked mine a couple times, I didn't drain the oil.
Bike was leaning on the kickstand when I removed the cam chest cover.

Thanks for the reply. This is good to know. I wasn't sure if oil would run out after pulling off the cover.

You will lose a little but just have a drain pan or rag to catch it. It will not amount to enough to worry about though. Good luck with the inspection!

Draining the oil from the tank will not affect the oil level in the engine sump, unless you drain the engine sump itself, & trust me--you DO NOT wanna mess with that drain plug. Imprecise installation of that plug can crack your cases.

Thanks again guys. Hey Dickie, I never heard how your special date went a few weeks ago. Last time I checked there was about 10 pages of posts waiting to hear about the date.........so how was it?

Follow up: after 14000 miles both tensioners looked about 90 percent so I think wait another 20000 miles before checking again. Thanks again!
