It ain't got nothin to do with getting old, I learned real young not to leave sh't out in bear country. I don't know about a bear proof canister, but get something to help hold in the smell and and some string to hang it up in a tree away from camp.
It's a scientific fact that bears don't like granola bars. In the Nature Valley commercials on TV, those people are always eating those things on the side of a mountain, sitting on a rock next to a lake, hiking a trail, etc. You should be fine.
Just don't eat Snickers candy bars...the sharks love them.
doing the blue ridge parkway, planning on camping. not as worried in a car about bears and food, but what about on a bike.
will be taking freeze dried but also plan on some fresh stuff although i will buy it use it for the most part
should i get one of those bear proof canisters?
man, i must be getting old, this stuff never bothered me before.
Doesn't matter what container you store it in, a Bear will be able to smell it. If you're going into bear country, don't bring food within at least 150yrs of your tent. Put it in a back pack throw a rope over a high tree branch and haul it up there. Make sure it's sealed well to keep squirels, mice and other rodents out.
Yosemite Park out here has a " Bear " wall with lots of pictures of what a 200lbs blackbear will do to get at ANY food , all the campsites have heavy thick steel boxes for food storage you lock and it sits away from the sleeping areas .
I personally like all the car pictures where people put the food inside and Yogi peeled them open like a can of sardines to get at stuff .
Campers & hikers are told to find a high branch away from camp a bit put anything food into a heavy bag and hang it by rope at least 10' off the ground and away from the tree .
Personally in 40 yrs of scooter tramping and camping only real wild life I've had trouble with have been of the drunk two legged variety or the guy with the motor home who drug his generator over and set it up 4 foot away from my tent .

Yep, the two legged drunk is the worst animal. How long did that generator last? I imagine not very long. LOL.
