The other day I saw a really nice Fatboy Lo with 2 tone pipes and have been thinking about doing it to my Fatboy. I'd like to have the muffler section of my pipes done in flat black but am curious if flat black stove paint would stick to chrome or would I have to remove the chrome before painting. I plan on leaving the header pipes chrome. What do you guys think? Any ideas or pictures would be helpful. Thanks!
Should just use a Scotch pad to rough it up enough to hold the primer. That is unless the chrome is flaking off or loose, other wise just scuff it up and paint away.
The V&H pipes on my 2002 Fatboy are probably 10 years old and the mufflers were starting to show their age with some corrosion, yellowing and discoloration. The header pipes are still in pretty nice shape so I knew I was going to either replace the mufflers or buy new pipes. After looking at many bikes and photos I decided to black-out the mufflers myself and have 2-tone pipes. I figured if I didn't like the finished product I could always buy new replacement mufflers from V&H for $280. Anyways, what do you think?
Hey, I like the look of those Defender systems. My V&H Big Radius pipes were showing a bit of age, so I had them spray painted with header paint. It's an improvement I think. Inexpensive and easy to redo, if/when they start to look shabby in their current state.
Swampfox, I like your pipes for sure. I've seen many other bikes with 2 tone exhaust and wasn't sure if I'd like the long-shots in 2 tone, but now after the fact, I like mine and will keep them like this for awhile. Btw, I simply scuffed the chrome finish with 000 steel wool and painted them with Rustoleum Flat Black Stove Paint. This paint withstands temps up to 1200 degrees F.
Spoonie, not sure what you mean, but I did clean the header pipes with chrome cleaner/polish then used V&H chrome conditioner to protect the finish.
