I have a set of 12" mini apes on my RKC. Those are very comfortable for me; I'm 6' 2" and they fit my ergos perfect. My buddy has 16" apes on a Softtail and he said it takes some getting used to but has ridden all day and night with them with no problems.
Apes are subjective. What may be good for me might not be good for you. The haters will say they suck, you don't have as good control, blah blah blah. The lovers will say they are the best thing since sliced bread. I like mine because I am so tall that it puts my arms in a more normal position for "me." I am more comfy on 500+ mile days than I was with the stock bars, when my hands were at my knees. Mine are 14's, and they are more like mini apes for my hieght. My hands are just below my shoulders. I've noticed no difference in control of the bike for the better or worse.
