Default Deal's Gap from MI, where to stay?

Is Knoxville going to be our best bet July 5-6-7? Looking for somewhere decently cheap, but not where our bikes will get robbed.

Go to Tail of the Dragon website for a long listing of good places to stay.

There is a cheap and decent motel at Deal's Gap. We went this year and by the time we arrived they were already closed so we had to find somewhere else. We stayed at Fontana Village Resort. It is a really nice hotel. I wouldn't say it was cheap but it wasn't over priced either.

I just stayed at Fontana last week. It's a really nice place, as far as looks and the secluded location in the mountains, but probably expensive if you don't have a group/event discount. I was at a group event held at Fontana, so there was nobody there but us, but if I was going on my own I'd probably stay in Cherokee or Robbinsville - you'd be closer to restaurants and stuff, while still being in a good riding area where you can spend all the time you want at the Dragon and Cherohala Skyway and such.

On the bad side, as far as Fontana Village, we had terrible food that was way overpriced at every meal (pretty sure everything was microwaved and came from a box, at $12-17 per buffet meal) and the Pit Stop at the entrance was charging about $1 a gallon more for gas than stations near civilization.

Seems like a lot of the overflow from our event stayed at the Robbinsville Microtel.

Knoxville isn't all that far away, if your vacation is centered on the Dragon, but Robbinsville is more convenient to the whole motorcycle-centered area (Dragon, Cherohala Skyway, Cherokee, Maggie Valley, etc.) and you can ride right across the mountain to Gatlinburg if you need more variety of restaurants and stuff.

Punkin center motorcycle resort.

Cheap. Clean. Great staff, family owned. Tent, rv or cabins. All guests must be on or bring motorcycle. Food and beer/limited bar on site. Just a few miles from dragon and foothills parkway.

Try Townsend Tn. its the quiet side of the Smokies.. Mostly motels and a few restaurants but not much exciting night life..not a lot of traffic and your close to Foothills Parkway which takes you to Hwy 129 the Dragon.. your not far from the Harley Dealership in Maryville..I'm sure they will have something going on especially Friday night at The Shed..From Townsend any road you take will be a fun and scenic ride..Knoxville and Gatlinburg are very congested and not a lot of fun on a motorcycle..

We've stayed at the Microtel in Robbinsville, NC a few times.
Good location for food and a coupe of indy shops nearby.
