National and Local here. Now because of my wife, I'm on the damn activities commitee.... Actually, met a good group of people that like to ride because of my chapter, quite happy
National and Local. Our chapter is veery active with longer weekend rides every month to different destinations. Its pretty cool to ride with a group of people who you know, and you know how they ride.
Tried the National only for several years, and it seemed I always rode alone, but now with the friends met thru the local chapter over the past year, I always have someone to ride with, normally a small group of close friends that all enjoy the same things.
Its true that you get out of a local, what you put into it. I am currently the Editor of our Chapters newsletter, and due to that, I have more access to information on upcoming events at the dealer, and I get a say in the planning o what our chapter does, or doesn't do.
All this for a measly 15 bucks a year. Ithrow awaymore money than that on nothing every week...I'd be willing to pay alot more ...
They stopped the discount for the local chapter around here last year. I've been a National and local member for 4 years , but I'm not sure if I'll re-up with the local as I really don't ride with them often
I'm not re-joing national or local. The magazine is boring. If you read one, you've read them all. The free towing is offered by my bike insurance anyway. Our dealer doesn't offer squat to local HOG members. The dealer lets them have meetings there. Oh, not a room or anything, they allow the HOG members to have a meeting while standing in a corner of theshowroom at closing time. I don't think the dealer would let them do that ifhe thought he could get away with it. Good people in the local HOG, but it seems to be mostly a "let's go eat" group. I never have liked riding in large groups, it just isn't my thing.
I enjoy the National events and always meet interesting people. Have done the ABC's for the past 13 years and have had a ball planning trips to get different letters (only 88 points in 2006 but hope to do better this year).
Over the years I've been a member of 4 different chapters - each had their own personality - all were worthwhile.
I prefer to do long rides (i.e. over 1000 miles) with just the wife (she rides her own bike) or alone. I don'tcare for"group" riding due to the wildly different skill levels of the riders, but join in and most always have a good time.
National and member of two locals. Neither local gives a dealership discount. I joined two chapters so I could meet new friends and find new places to ride. I haven't seen much of California, and I joined a slug chapter (not very many rides) and a good riding chapter. Even on the non event weekends, we always get a group of us to ride.
It's a personal decision, but think of what you want out of the local chapter. Joining just for a discount doesn't make sense to me unless you plan on buying a lot of stuff.
National only.I do enjoy the magazine, what there is of it.Thought about joining local group, but every time I see them gathered at the dealer,I change my mind. Most of them look like a advertisment for Harley clothing.

Ain't that the truth. I've got a few Harley Davidson Tee Shirts and my Harley Davidson coffee cup but that's it. When I go into my local dealer and watch all the Harley Davidson logos going by it's almost embarrassing.
