Too lazy to change my oil this time around so I headed over to the local indy. (note to self: check the damn OD once in a while that lube was cooked.) Shooting the breeze I mentioned I wanted to sell the '03 FXST for a whopping $7500 on cragislist but have had no replies. None, zero, nada. Guy says the market is beyond soft for used Harleys.
That's amazing. Who would have thought?
On one hand losing that monthly payment would be great seeing as they just whacked my paystub. But then again, it's a great little scooter. It's just a little more than $200 bucks a month to keep, so it's no biggie.
There are some simple rules of selling that are ignored when selling used anything. First the "invested in" doesn't mean much at least for non engine improvements. Selling a bike for what you would of paid for it stock and tens of thousands on it won't cut it in todays market. If you find a garage queen with low miles great go for it. Most people who post on Craigslist are, well, on crack, and aren't realistic about what it's worth.
Same here on CL,like all the sellers are on CRACK!
I wonder what they are actually selling for?
IF they sell, halfway between trade and retail. So you are in the ballpark bjewell. I'm sure your market is flooded, out here in the sticks that would be gone by now. My local dealer is almost sold out of used bikes and they charge closer to retail. In six weeks (after Sturgis) the price starts going down.

go "build" a bike on kbb.com and see what the diminished value of accessories is.. 25 dollars for engine guard, 10 dollars for custom floorboards, etc.. If you put an some fancy accessory, you do it because YOU like it... Not because you hope it will add value.. In reality, a COMPLETELY stock bike has more value in the resale market, than does one loaded with accessories.. With that said, I agree with you.. The price of used bikes available right now is too "close" to that of new ones.. Especially considering the lower rates available for buying new ones, promotions, etc.
