I am looking to close out a deal on a 2012 Softail Slim mid August. Been talking with the local dealership. Was wondering if the dealerships wheel and deal or are they firm on their MSRP? Any advice would certainly be welcomed. I will use cash to make the purchase. They always say cash talks, bs walks so...
The last two Harley's I've purchased new from a dealer were heavily discounted off MSRP. The days of paying MSRP or above on a Harley are long over and will probably never return.
It never hurts to ask. What's the worst they can say, "Hell, no." or "Are you kidding?"
Remember, they may have the bike that you want, but you have the money that they want. As long as you're prepared to walk away from the deal, you have the upper hand.

sorry, but i don't know where '3rd stone from the sun' is. at least in reference to harley dealers. dealers in my state do not budge off msrp. there's only a handful statewide, so i'd like to know where i can go to get a 'heavily discounted' bike...
Saying up front that you will be paying cash puts you in a weaker negotiating position I think. Dealers make additional money off of financing and they get their cash immediately anyway. The 2013s should be coming out in a month which also puts you in a better position negotiating for a 2012. If they won't cut you a good deal, I would wait on a 2013.
I have always paid cash for my motorcycles but I have not revealed that to a salesman until the sales price was agreed upon.
A dealer would much rather finance your new scooter than take cash. It is not unusual for the F&I guy to generate more income for the dealer than the sales guy.

Travel two hours to Cowboy Harley in Beaumont, TX. I've purchased 3 bikes there in the last 10 years and have always gotten under MSRP. Also, most major cities have multiple HD dealers that will compete for your business as long as you are willing to do the legwork.
2012's are all but done being produced. They announce the 13's this time next month. Both myself and my next-door neighbor got significant discounts and throw in's on our 2012 models.
