Yes, no typo, I did get 36,000 miles out of one rear Elite III and 42,000 miles from the OEM Dunlop 402. Like I said, they were down to 2/32" threads.
That's amazing, I can't seem to get 10k out of any rear I've tried so far(less than 9K out of the last Dunlop 402). I can usually push closer to 20k out of the fronts though.. Just put a Commander II on the rear about 2-3k ago, so far it still looks new.

I know what you mean regarding new tires, it's a whole new bike again. Regarding Dunlop vs Michelin, how much of the improvement is due to going from worn out tires which have become out of balance to brand new balanced tires? I just replaced my front tire (Dunlop) with the same Dunlop again, night and day difference! It's soooo smooth and quiet once again.
The Dunlop D-402 has concentric treads, which tend to follow seams, and grooves in pavement. The Metzlers, Avons,Elite-3s, and Commander IIs, all do not.
Many people report improved handling because the above new tires do not squirm around due to road conditions.
