From everything I've read, you did it right. They say don't release the throttle and hold on. Trying to steer around the animal can cause you to crash. I've ridden in WV. It's beautiful riding country but I've never seen so many deer anywhere else.
Yeah. The late great Hunter S. Thompson always said GAS IT if you're about to hit a deer. slamming on brakes makes the front end go down and ends up throwing the deer towards you.
one tip for riders...if you see a deer crossing the road, slow down because there is probably two or three more about to come out and cross too.
Very good advice!
This same thing happened to me 17 years ago. I was heading to work at dawn, and saw the line of young (smaller) deer crossing the road in front of me. I watched five cross in front of me and thought that was all of them. Then the sixth jumped up right in front of me. I was on a 650 metric cruiser, but I'm a pretty big guy and the extra mass proved useful I held on, closed my eyes just as I made impact, and clipped it just under its hind legs as it ran past. When I opened my eyes I couldn't believe I was still up - no damage. I saw the deer in my mirror flopping in the road behind me. I was in shock, and couldn't figure out what else to do but head to work and not be late.
I've fixed a couple bikes that hit deer, one a Kawasaki Concours and the other a ZX11. Both of we're going over 70 when they hit the deer and neither one crashed. Both guys told me it cut the deer in half. Hair, blood ,guts, **** everywhere and stunk.
I live in West Virginia, Wood County area. It seems like more and more are coming to the residential areas. I hit one with my truck a few months ago. It was 5:00pm. It use to be rare in the day time but it seems like they are a threat 24 hours a day now.
You did well SeeNoSun, most that I read about around here don't fare so well. Almost every year locally we lose a rider or more to deer, even had a recent death this year already.
My closest encounter (Last year) with them was so close that I swore that I could have reached out an petted it. It must have been leaping over my fender.
And I was pretty sure that there would be pucker folds and stains on my seat after that.
